Ajay Shah, Associate Professor in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE), was recently honored with the Young Engineer of the Year award at the Northeast Agricultural and Biological Engineering Conference (NABEC), a community of the American Society of Agricultural & Biological Engineers (ASABE). Each year, the award honors one member of NABEC, who has made outstanding contributions to the advancement of the agricultural and biological engineering profession.

Bhavik Bakshi, chemical and biomolecular engineering
SI Faculty Advisory Board
Bakshi received two of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers' (AIChE) most prestigious awards in the realm of environmental and sustainable engineering. The Cecil Award, given to individuals who make outstanding contributions and achievements in chemical engineering to aid with the preservation or improvement of the environment, was bestowed upon Bakshi by the Environmental Division of AIChE. The Sustainable Engineering Forum Education Award is presented to parties who have made and continue to make advancements in sustainability engineering education. In concurrence with these awards, Bakshi has been invited to AIChE's November annual meeting, where he will give the Cecil Lecture and be recognized for both awards.

Speaking about the microbiome of spacecraft. This conference will help NASA understand the abundance, type, and characteristics of the varieties of microbes found in spacecraft to mitigate problems that could occur during space exploration and capitalize on opportunities to control the spacecraft microbiome for the benefit of long-term space exploration.

Katrina Cornish, horticulture and crop science

Cornish received this award for her outstanding leadership and research contributions in developing next-generation bio-based materials by processes that are safe and environmentally friendly. The Bioenvironmental Polymer Society (BEPS) recognizes scientific excellence and service to the society. The prestigious lifetime achievement award is given to BEPS members who have made outstanding contributions that have advanced the scientific field and/or technological development of biopolymers, bio-based materials, or bioplastic/materials related to bioenergy. Cornish was recognized for her work as the Ohio Research Scholar for Bioemergent Materials, and technical director of the Program of Excellence in Natural Rubber Alternatives and also as an internationally recognized expert on alternative natural rubber prodution and on natural rubber biosynthesis.

Established in 1910, the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association (AAEA) is the leading professional association for agricultural and applied economists, with 2,500 members in more than 60 countries. Members of the AAEA work in academic or government institutions as well as in industry and not-for-profit organizations, and engage in a variety of research, teaching, and outreach activities in the areas of agriculture, the environment, food, health, and international development.

This award goes to those who have innovative research and have engaged in meaningful conversations about this research. Dannemiller was awarded for her role in  developing a new way to detect formaldehyde easily and quickly in the indoor environment using a smartphone; data would be accessible to the public.

The Academy was founded in 1780 by John Adams, John Hancock, and others who believed the new republic should honor exceptionally accomplished individuals and engage them in advancing the public good. The Academy’s dual mission remains essentially the same 239 years later with honorees from increasingly diverse fields and with the work focused on the arts, democracy, education, global affairs, and science. Thompson and Ellen Mosley-Thompson, Ohio State Distinguished University Professor in Geography, who was inducted to the academy in 2011, gave a talk on the importance of international collaboration in mitigating climate change at the Oct. 12, 2019 induction ceremony.

The fellowship, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, provides each Fellow with a six month or one-year sabbatical grant, a research, travel, or publication stipend, and participation in an annual conference/retreat. A total of 30 Fellowships are awarded each year. The program seeks particularly to increase the presence of junior faculty members who are underrepresented in their fields, as well as other faculty members committed to eradicating racial disparities in core fields in the arts and humanities.

This award honors those who have shown superior teaching. Faculty members are nominated by present and former students and colleagues and selected by a committee of alumni, students, and faculty. Horack received this honor due to the inclusive environment of his classroom and his genuine teaching style, which makes students feel valued.
