The Sustainability Institute serves as Ohio State’s “front door” for companies, community groups and policymakers seeking to engage university researchers and students on sustainability and resilience issues. We catalyze partnerships to build a more sustainable and equitable future for all.

Helping partners become more sustainable and resilient

The Sustainability Institute develops and supports partnerships that contribute to overcoming many of the world’s most complex and pervasive challenges, including climate change, ecosystem and biodiversity loss, water scarcity and contamination, waste generation, and the unequal impacts of these challenges. We leverage the very best Ohio State has to offer.

  • Ohio State is home to award-winning faculty who understand that collaboration leads to transformative and enduring research outcomes. The Sustainability Institute supports and catalyzes this work by integrating the knowledge of 31 core faculty and nearly 300 affiliated faculty and researchers to help partners solve problems such as closing the loop on packaging waste, modeling climate risk or designing metrics to measure progress toward regional sustainability goals. Learn more about ways Ohio State is supporting corporate climate action.
  • Our campus is an unrivaled living laboratory, providing countless opportunities to test solutions to sustainability problems across campus at a scale equal to a medium-sized city. Because the Sustainability Institute sits at the center of efforts to make the university more sustainable, we can identify opportunities to use our campus as a test bed to develop applied solutions for partners.
  • We help partners engage with students who share a passion for sustainability. Ohio State offers 74 undergraduate majors and graduate programs with sustainability-related learning. More than 80 student organizations work on environmental, food security, recycling and energy issues. Because navigating so many opportunities can be difficult, the Sustainability Institute helps partners seeking everything from summer interns to more permanent talent acquisition.
  • Internal connections are vitally important also. The Sustainability Institute is affiliated with 19 Ohio State research centers and five administrative units that can further enhance the scope and deliverables of a partnership.

Contact us to discuss how we can work together to meet your sustainability needs. We look forward to partnering with you.
