Abdollah Shafieezadeh, civil, environmental and geodetic engineering and Sustainability Institute affiliated faculty, received a $249,638 grant from the National Science Foundation to develop a novel, deeply integrated physics-based data-driven approach to assess and enhance the resilience of power transmission systems impacted by climatic extremes. The research is expected to help key decision-makers for the transmission infrastructure to characterize resilience under various uncertain future scenarios and identify optimal adaptation or mitigation strategies. The research program is complemented with educating the next generation of scholars in modeling hazards and infrastructure resilience through an interdisciplinary, research-integrated educational program, a strong commitment to increased diversity in student training and broad dissemination of the results.

Katrina Cornish was elected as a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineers for high-performance, natural allergy-safe latex for medical and consumer products, supporting developing countries.

Mary Rodriguez, agricultural communication, education and leadership

The North American Colleges of Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) Educator Award recognizes educators who excel as teachers in the agricultural disciplines. Rodriguez was recognized as a recipient during the organizations virtual conference in June. Rodriguez currently instructs a variety of courses, including the Teaching Methods in Non-Formal Learning Environments, Community Leadership and Foundations of International Development. Throughout her time with Ohio State she has also taught Foundations of Personal and Professional Leadership, Research Methods, Teaching Methods in Non-Formal Learning Environments and Extension Education in Developing Countries to both undergraduate and graduate students.

Ramteen Sioshansi, integrated systems engineering

Department of Integrated Systems Engineering (ISE) Professor and Associate Chair Ramteen Sioshansi will receive a national award that recognizes excellence in teaching operations research. Sioshansi will be formally presented with the award at the 2020 IISE Annual Conference & Expo which has been postponed to October 31 – November 3 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Candidates for the award are nominated for the instruction of an undergraduate course in operations research methods or applications. Sioshansi is being honored for the course ISE 3210 Nonlinear and Dynamic Optimization. The rigorous course was developed to meet the needs of students facing complex optimization challenges in their capstone course projects. The Early-Career Faculty Excellence Award recognizes outstanding performance in all three areas of research, teaching, and service of early-career faculty at the time of promotion and tenure and is selected by the college promotion and tenure faculty review committee. Lin was recently promoted to associate professor with tenure approved by the Board of Trustees.

Kip Curtis has joined the Office of Outreach and Engagement as a faculty fellow. In this role, he will continue his focus on the development and implementation of a replicable model of community engagement that results in expansion of the Mansfield Microfarm to other Ohio communities.

Jin Wang, electrical and computer engineering
Wang received the award in recognition of his contributions to wide bandgap (WBG) power electronics-based electric machine drives. He has been one of the leading experts and an early advocate for implementation of WBG power devices for applications including electric vehicles, medium voltage drives and electric aircrafts. The Nagamori Foundation was established in 2014 by Nidec Corp. founder, chairman and CEO Shigenobu Nagamori to contribute to the scientific and industrial development inside and outside Japan by commending those who engage in R&D activities, domestic and overseas, in the area of research and technology.

Susan Olesik, chemistry and biochemistry

Susan Olesik, who was recently appointed dean for natural and mathematical sciences effective July 1, is an internationally recognized scholar in the field of analytical chemistry. She sits on the Academic Affairs, Student Life and Research Committee of the Board of Trustees and co-chairs the University Advisory Subcommittee of the Presidential Search Committee. Olesik is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the American Chemical Society. She served as chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry from 2011-2019, during which she helped launch the interdisciplinary Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Chemistry Building. Committed to inclusion and access, Olesik has overseen scholarship programs that support first-generation and underrepresented undergraduate students, and she directs the Ohio House of Science and Engineering and Wonders of Our World science outreach programs. Olesik earned her PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has been a faculty member at Ohio State since 1986.

Peter Craigmile has been elected as a 2020 Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) Fellow. Craigmile was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the study of time series models, long memory processes and spatio-temporal processes; influential cross-disciplinary contributions; and dedicated services to the IMS and the profession.

Jill Clark, associate professor in the John Glenn College of Public Affairs and Sustainability Institute affilated faculty, has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to Canada for “Scaling-up food democracy: An analysis of Canadian and U.S. food policy councils.” During her time in Canada, Clark will do research at Carleton University to study the role of local, state and provincial food policy councils in a national food policy.
