Six faculty members at The Ohio State University were recently honored with the 2023 Provost's Award for Distinguished Teaching by a Lecturer. The award annually recognizes a maximum of six lecturers or other associated faculty for their teaching excellence. Honorees are inducted into Ohio State's Academy of Teaching and recognized with an honorarium made possible by the Office of Academic Affairs. The honorees were notified of their awards through surprise announcements led by senior university leaders.

The Battelle Engineering, Technology and Human Affairs (BETHA) Endowment annual grant competition supports projects that examine the complex relationship between science and technology on society and cultural issues. Four projects were selected for the 2023 award cycle.

Abdollah Shafieezadeh is actively engaged in developing student‐centered learning approaches and building his cultural competencies to support students who are typically underrepresented in engineering disciplines. A College of Engineering Diversity Partner, he has also obtained an inclusive mentoring endorsement through the Better Science through Better Mentoring program.

Susan Melsop, Department of Design

Susan Melsop is an associate professor in the Department of Design, the major area coordinator for the BSD in Interior Design, and co-director of the DESIS Lab at The Ohio State University. Though her formal training is in architecture, Susans work mediates between the scale of building, installations, furniture, and sculpture. Her research focuses on community engaged design-build, sustainable building practices, design pedagogy and reflective practices. Early and influential interests include East Asian philosophy, Buddhism, and the hermeneutics of sacred space.

Congratulations to Huyen Le, Andre Carrel, and Harsh Shah for receiving the 2023 Moshe Givoni Prize, selection of the best paper published in Transport Reviews over the previous calendar year, for their paper entitled “Impacts of online shopping on travel demand: a systematic review.”

Four scientists at The Ohio State University have been elected to the 2022 class of American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Fellows. The AAAS Fellowship, recognizing scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications, is one of the most prestigious honors a U.S. scientist can receive. Fellows are elected by their academic peers.

Jill Clark, associate professor in the John Glenn College of Public Affairs, has earned the 2022 Excellence in Faculty Community Engagement Award from the Engagement Scholarship Consortium (ESC). Clark received this national recognition for her leadership with the Franklin County Local Food Council (FCLFC).
