Bart Elmore, associate professor of history and Sustainability Institute core faculty member, received the J. Anthony Lukas Work-In-Progress Award from the Columbia Journalism School and the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University.

The award is given annually to aid in the completion of nonfiction works on American political or social topics. Elmore was recognized for his upcoming book, SEED MONEY: Monsanto’s Past and the Future of Food (W.W. Norton).

Elmore’s publication focuses on the influence Monsanto has on the food consumers eat. Through field work and research, Elmore details the environmental and social history of the world’s largest genetically engineered seed enterprise.

The book expands the understanding of sustainably and responsibly feeding the growing population — a pressing social issue.

As an award recipient, Elmore will receive $25,000 to support finishing his work, which has an expected publication date of 2021.
