The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded research funding to assistant professor Joel Paulson, Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Sustainability Institute core faculty member. Paulson’s project focuses on optimization methodology with application to three sectors of sustainable energy, and the grant will support the data collection, analyzation and presentation process. The project also seeks to involve K-12 education and partner with local schools to increase the teaching and learning of these kinds of materials more widely. Paulson’s inspiration came from the scientific principle known as grey-box modeling, which surmises that repetition of already-known information should be avoided, especially when concerning “machine learning methods.”
