The Ohio State University is collaborating with AEP Energy to provide opportunities for faculty, staff, students, and alumni living in Ohio to choose green energy for their home’s electricity supply. Since June 2023, Buckeyes have been switching their electricity supply service to a 100% renewable energy plan from AEP Energy, reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions that are causing climate change.
AEP Energy and Ohio State recently achieved a significant milestone by offsetting over 3 million pounds of carbon emissions through program participants. That is the equivalent of 3.5 million miles driven.
In addition to the renewable energy benefits, program participants receive a competitive fixed rate for their electricity supply, a satisfaction guarantee with no early termination fee and 40% more reward dollars through AEP Energy Reward Store.
“As a fellow alum myself, we are happy to collaborate with The Ohio State Alumni Association to offer electricity supply choice with renewable energy options to alumni, staff and faculty in Ohio.” said Brian Whitlach, Senior Vice President, Customer Solutions, AEP Energy.
“This program is an innovative example of Ohio State striving to achieve climate solutions from within its community,” said Kate Bartter, Executive Director of Ohio State’s Sustainability Institute. “It is impressive that Buckeyes across Ohio have already stepped up to offset three million pounds of emissions.”
AEP Energy, a retail electricity and natural gas supplier, is a subsidiary of American Electric Power (AEP) and serves more than half a million customers. Retail electricity suppliers, like AEP Energy, purchase energy from producers and the local utilities deliver electricity to customers. Under Ohio state law, residents have the option of choosing their electricity supply provider, giving individual customers the power to decide what provider best meets their needs, including pricing and service details.
Through the partnership program, AEP Energy matches 100% of its participating State customers’ electricity use with Green-e Energy® certified wind Renewable Energy Credits. These credits ensure that customers in Ohio receive the benefits of renewable energy, even if their local utility does not provide it. Renewable energy, also referred to as green energy, is derived from sources like sunlight and wind that are replenished by nature.
Together, AEP Energy and Ohio State are working towards a clean energy future and serving the Ohio community. Ohio State employees, alumni, and fans living in Ohio are welcome to join fellow Buckeyes statewide to participate in the program.
