Climate and Societal Impacts of Transportation Technologies

Leader: Huyen Le

Scope

This group focuses on the social, infrastructure, environmental, and climate impacts of information and communication technologies (ICT), such as teleworking, teleconferencing, and online shopping. Specifically, we look to investigate the impacts of ICT on four following dimensions:

  1. Social Equity -  Due to the lack of access to ICT by low-income and marginalized populations, does ICT improve or decrease accessibility to employment, education, and other opportunities?

  2. Transportation Infrastructure Systems - What is the impact on daily travel demand, investment in public transit, roads, and parking? How does ICT affect land use and reshape everyday travel patterns? How should  city planners prepare for future infrastructure and technology with ICT in mind?

  3. Environment -  How does ICT impact net energy consumption (e.g. heating/cooling buildings and fuel for vehicles) when people travel less and stay home more? To what extent this shift impact GHG emissions?

  4. Micro and Regional Climates - How are local climates impacted if ICT use goes up?  Due to variance in the distribution of access to ICT, how does this impact the equity of exposure to environmental hazards and access to mitigation measures?

The group is particularly seeking experts in social equity, environment & climate justice, building and transportation energy, and other dimensions related to ICT and urban development.

Goals

This group will meet monthly to discuss related research news/progress in the field and new research ideas. We seek to develop grant proposals for internal and external funding opportunities, as well as generating journal articles to be published in interdisciplinary journals.
